Georgia Southern's J.D. King was making a run to an outstanding season in 2020 when it was cut short by a torn ACL in his left knee in the seventh game. A combination of a power and speed back with the ability to run inside and outside the tackles, King still earned All-Sun Belt Conference honorable mention honors. King had surgery and rehabilitated the knee, missing spring and fall practice sesssions. After sitting out the first three games of the 2021 slate, he made his return on Sept. 25 against Louisiana.

King saw only limited action, appearing in four games and was able to redshirt and plan a return for a sixth year this fall. That plan has changed, as King announced on his Twitter account Tuesday that he has retired from playing football. "It is with a humble heart that I would like to announce my retirement from the game I love," the post read. "My body and my mind tell me it is time to take my next step in life." He played in 12 games in 2019, starting six, and made All-Sun Belt honorable mention after tallying 804 yards and eight TDs on 185 carries. King started the first seven games in 2020 before the knee injury against Troy cost him the remainder of that contest and the next six. He finished with 116 carries for 625 yards and five TDs. - Savannah Morning News

With the Hurricane losing their top rusher and two of their top three receivers from last season, they'll be looking for quarterback Davis Brin to take a step forward in his fifth year with the program. Brin saw the first significant action of his career last season, passing for 3,254 yards and 18 touchdowns with a 59.3% completion rate. He also added 75 yards and a score on the ground. He'll need to improve from an efficiency standpoint, however. Brin's 16 interceptions were the most in the FBS last season, with his 132.6 passer rating being the third-worst among quarterbacks with at least 400 pass attempts. - Wyoming Tribune Eagle

Clay Helton took stock of the team when he was hired to be Georgia Southern's new head football coach last November. Helton reviewed film and observed the Eagles for four games that finished a 3-9 campaign in 2021. He then took over the program and watched players grind through nine weeks of strength and conditioning, and five weeks of spring practice culminating with the spring intrasquad game April 23. Asked recently which players stood out most, Helton said without hesitation that on offense it was the wide receivers.

The same position group that was basically an afterthought in 2021 in the Eagles' run-heavy offense. All receivers on pass plays - including tight ends and running backs - totaled just 141 receptions for 1,765 yards and a mere five touchdowns (four by tight ends) last season. "People came up to me after the spring game and go, "Coach, we didn't know these guys. We looked at the roster and some of the guys had been there three years," Helton recalled with a chuckle. Khaleb Hood, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound rising senior, is perhaps the best known of the group with team-highs of 41 catches for 497 yards last season. He didn't score a touchdown. - Savannah Morning News

Former Arizona State wide receiver LV Bunkley-Shelton wrote on Twitter on Wednesday morning that he has narrowed his choices for a new school to Kansas and Oklahoma. Bunkley-Shelton, who is 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, took an official visit to Kansas last week, one week after he did the same at Oklahoma. A four-star recruit out of Los Angeles in the Class of 2020, he was ranked the No. 86 player in the country and the No. 16 player at his position, according to Rivals.com, and played in the US Army All-American Bowl.

A commitment from Bunkley-Shelton would be a significant addition for the Jayhawks, who lost Kwamie Lassiter II, their leading receiver last season as a sixth-year senior. Bunkley-Shelton caught 33 passes for 418 yards and two touchdowns while starting seven games as a redshirt freshman for the Sun Devils last season. He had four catches for a season-high 76 yards in the win over Colorado and matched a season high with four catches in the Las Vegas Bowl loss to Wisconsin. - Lawrence Journal World

If not for an injury that cost him the entire 2021 season, Upshaw might have left for the draft this spring. Instead, he will look to prove he is fully healthy in an offense that should make heavy use of the tight end. Kentucky's tight end room is deep, but the 6-foot-6, 246-pound Upshaw has the most well-rounded skillset of the group. No Kentucky tight end has been drafted since Jacob Tamme in 2008. - Courier Journal

Arizona State wide receiver LV Bunkley-Shelton announced on Thursday that he is entering the transfer portal after two years with the program. Bunkley-Shelton appeared in four games as a freshman, hauling in 11 passes for 100 yards before he was eventually redshirted. In his second season with the Sun Devils, Bunkley-Shelton caught 33 balls for 418 yards over 12 games. His yards per reception jumped 3.6 yards from 9.1 his first season to 12.7 in the second. Bunkley-Shelton finished third on the team in receiving yards in 2021 behind Ricky Pearsall and Rachaad White, who both will not be with the team next season. - ArizonaSports.com

The Georgia Southern football team wrapped up their 2022 spring football season with the annual Blue/White game Saturday afternoon at Paulson Stadium. First year head coach Clay Helton got his first opportunity to hit the field with the Eagles with a good crowd on hand as around 4,000 fans came out and saw the Eagle offense put up over 700 yards of offense and 51 points as the White team beat the Blue team 51-28. Leading the offense was Buffalo transfer quarterback Kyle Vantrease who was 16-25 for 217 yards and one touchdown.

Vantrease feels the team has taken huge steps in the right direction and is excited about wrapping up spring and getting to know his teammates better. "This being my sixth year I know what we need next and that is bonding," said Vantrease. "Over the summer and into summer workouts that is the most important thing. A team that is connected is going to be a dangerous team. On the filed we just need more reps, but off the field is what is important right now." On the field Vantrease spread the ball around nicely with Houston transfer Jeremy Singleton getting the most targets (10) and receptions (6). Derwin Burgess led the way in yardage with three catches for 80 yards, while Khaleb Hood had three receptions and Sam Kennerson had the lone touchdown pass from Vantrease. - Savannah Morning News
